Spider Facts.

There are over 650 species of spiders in the UK, but only a few of them are considered household pests. Here are some common spiders that are found in the UK:

  1. House spider (Tegenaria domestica): The house spider is one of the most common spiders found in UK homes. They are brown in color and can grow up to 12mm in length.

  2. False widow spider (Steatoda nobilis): The false widow spider is a relatively new arrival in the UK, but has become increasingly common in recent years. They are dark brown to black in color and have a distinctive red or orange marking on their abdomen. Their bite can be painful, and they are considered dangerous to people.

  3. Zebra spider (Salticus scenicus): The zebra spider is a small and agile spider that is often found indoors. They are black and white in color and have distinctive markings on their body.

  4. Giant house spider (Eratigena atrica): The giant house spider is one of the largest spiders found in the UK, and can grow up to 12cm in leg span. They are brown in color and have a hairy body.

  5. Daddy longlegs spider (Pholcus phalangioides): The daddy longlegs spider, also known as the cellar spider, is often found in cellars and basements. They have a small body and long, thin legs.

  6. While most spiders in the UK are harmless and play an important role in controlling other insect populations, some people may still find them unsettling or frightening. If a spider infestation is causing concern, it is recommended to seek advice from a pest control professional.

Pest control Spider Life cycle

Spider Life cycle.

The spider life cycle can vary slightly depending on the species, but generally includes the following stages:

  1. Egg: The life cycle of a spider begins with an egg. Female spiders lay their eggs in a sac or cocoon, which they protect until they hatch.

  2. Spiderling: Once the eggs hatch, the spiderlings emerge. They are very small and resemble miniature adults, but with fewer legs. Spiderlings go through several molts as they grow and develop.

  3. Juvenile: After molting several times, spiderlings reach the juvenile stage. Juvenile spiders resemble adults but are smaller and have not yet reached sexual maturity.

  4. Adult: Once a spider reaches sexual maturity, it becomes an adult. Adult spiders are fully developed and capable of reproducing. The lifespan of an adult spider varies greatly depending on the species, with some living only a few months and others living several years.

  5. Mating: Adult spiders mate to produce offspring. The process of mating can be dangerous for males, as females may eat them before, during, or after mating.

  6. Reproduction: Female spiders produce eggs after mating, and the cycle begins again.

The time it takes for a spider to reach adulthood can vary depending on the species and environmental conditions. Some spiders may take only a few weeks to reach adulthood, while others may take several months or even years.

Spider Treatments

Spider Treatments.

In the UK, there are various spider treatments available depending on the severity of the infestation and the species of spider. Here are some common spider treatments used in the UK:

  1. Professional Insecticides: Insecticides are a common treatment for spiders in the UK. These can be applied as a spray or dust in areas where spiders are likely to hide, such as cracks and crevices, corners, and behind furniture.

  2. Glue traps: Glue traps can be used to catch spiders, particularly in areas where insecticides cannot be used, such as around food preparation areas. The traps should be placed in areas where spiders are likely to travel, such as along walls and under furniture.

  3. Vacuuming: Vacuuming can be an effective way to remove spiders and their webs from infested areas. This method can also help to remove other insects that spiders may be feeding on.

  4. Exclusion: Exclusion involves sealing up cracks, crevices, and other entry points that spiders may be using to gain access to the building. This can help to prevent spiders from entering in the first place.
